Viitasen Piia
is an Emma-awarded songwriter who has captivated both critics and live audiences with her five albums, carving out a place for herself among Finland’s leading storytellers. Her expression, rooted in acoustic folk and Americana, has over the years gained new shades alongside its original style, and by combining acoustic and electronic elements, she has discovered a rich and distinctive musical world that resonates with strong compositions and lyrics that delve deep into the essence of being human.
All five of Viitasen Piia’s albums have received wonderful receptions among critics and have expanded the band’s live presence across Finland. The debut album, Viitasen Piia, released in the autumn of 2012, garnered numerous excellent reviews and considerable radio airplay, despite being self-released. The second album, Uni onnesta, released by Texicalli Records, earned the band an Emma nomination and a spot among Helsingin Sanomat’s best albums of 2014. The band’s third album, Laulumaa, released at the end of 2016, continued its upward trajectory, receiving a full five stars from Helsingin Sanomat, Keskisuomalainen, Ilkka, and Pohjalainen, in addition to being chosen as the domestic album of the year by MTV.fi. The fourth album, Meidän jälkeemme hiljaisuus, released in September 2019, brought the band another Emma nomination, along with awards for Best Album and Best Single from Aux ry, several five-star reviews, and a place among Helsingin Sanomat’s best albums of 2019.
Viitasen Piia’s acclaimed fifth album, Ihmisen aika, was released on March 15, 2024. Ihmisen aika achieved a triple victory at the Indie Awards, earning the titles of Album of the Year, Single of the Year, and Artist of the Year. Additionally, Ihmisen aika won the Emma award in the Critics’ Choice category.
At the Ylläs Jazz Blues 2026 festival, Piia will perform solo and host her own club, Sininen Hetki with Viitasen Piia. The club guests will include The Moontwins and Aki Tykki, known for his work with the band Happoradio.
